I Love Rolls! (the dinner AND the belly kind)

~A Letter to All Women

This message is a huge warning to women of all ages, shapes and sizes. It is what I know for sure and what I have thoroughly learned the hard way.

Simply put: LOVE YOURSELVES JUST AS YOU ARE THIS MINUTE. Make it a point to drown your whole body in self adoration for always. Fall in love with yourself until you feel sick and conceited. Spoil yourself with kindness every single day. Look in the mirror each and every time you brush your teeth, put your contacts in, primp your quaff, check for spinach in your smile, look for wrinkles or when making sure the sleep is out of your beautiful eyes and dance within the beauty of your inner self, your spirit and your image. If you do not, who will? Do not wait for a man or partner, family or loved one to do this for you. That is empty.

I have recently come to realize, completely understand and fully absorb that we are FAR too hard on ourselves. This is a typical subject matter. I have been hearing for some years now on TV and in girly mags (that don’t really support what they say) that there is a self esteem issue in this country, among young women, that needs to be dealt with. I have always known this. And even still, I have been far, far too hard on myself. If you were to ask my best friends, they will tell you! I am my own worst critic. I insult myself all the time. And recently, I have seen photos of myself (pre-baby) that knock my socks off, yeah back when I had steadily hated my body, was constantly dieting and continually had a self image that was dumpy.

Another new mom-friend of mine said the same happened to her, being shocked when seeing pictures of herself from before baby, after the baby, wandering why she was so hard on herself. So post-baby many (not all, but many) of us have saggy boobs, stretchy belly skin, maybe some uber-sexy stretch marks on chest, belly, butt or thighs, pick your favorite flavor! And then, we look back at photos of ourselves in high school or college and think, “why the heck did I hate my thighs THEN?!” While both my friend and I would not ever change what we have now for those high school days, our ideas on image now and then still surprised us.

Many, who know me, know full well I have always had, most of my life, a mental and physical issue with my stomach. Yeah so I have a physically weak stomach no matter whether I am on a division 1 collegiate sports team, working out hard every day OR if I decide that I really just don’t feel like exercising or watching what I eat or drink for say a YEAR still, they are always there, haunting me. The belly rolls. Yes, the belly rolls that wrap around, via your side waist, and give birth to the back fat. You know the rolls I am talking about….mmmhhhmm, the ones right under the back of your bra strap that just totally complete any outfit you put on, yup, that one, going right along with the muffin top.

My issue with my belly peaked at a time in college long before the thought of having children came along. I had noticed a frumpy middle on my bod for sometime but never put much thought to it. I decided to love myself no matter what and put a bikini on for a water ride I went on with a bunch of friends. Like a lot of amusement parks will do, there was a picture taken right at the most pivotal moment of the ride, you know, right at that moment when everyone looks their most attractive!? So I was at the head of this lovely log-floom-type ride, in front of a line up all of my much skinnier, model-esque, no belly fat-having girlfriends behind me. No worries, I said to myself! “I loves my pretty self and my string bikini, I am having some water ride fun and feeling good.” Until……we all walked off the ride, met up with our guys in the group at the exit, only to find a humongous, multiple TV screen wall of our picture broadcasting for everyone in the entire park to see. On screen upon giant screen there I was, right up front, arms in the air and belly rolls on top of disgusting belly rolls displayed as we descended down a steep water slide hill, all in a still frame, frozen, never ending shot. The guys laughed and made fun of my belly fat. The girls shushed the guys, trying to protect my feelings and I just stood there, completely and utterly mortified, stiff with embarrassment and extremely sad. I laughed it off like I was a chubster and, “oh well, silly picture!” But it killed me inside. Did I really look THAT bad? “I guess I do,” I thought. I always knew I had a little bit of a tummy but never imagined it to be as huge, look as nasty and feel as obese as it looked up there, that day on all those huge TV screens. I was scared forever. It made me hate myself worse than I already had my whole life. No matter what I do I can never get rid of those belly rolls, the heart ache or the tears they bring.

I believe that outwardly, excess body weight is a representation of an inward imbalance, either mental or physical. I can tell you the exact time I started accumulating belly fat. It was just after a bad experience I had with a terminated pregnancy. Ever since, that horrific experience my body dramatically started changing. It was not quick though, it was a slow change, but dramatic all the same. I am now a woman who has that and many other things to heal and seek balance with. I do work on the healing regularly.

So ladies my point is, the mental imbalance is all there before we have a little bundle of joyful perfection of a baby and before that skin is stretched. It is there before we sit on the couch for too long with the Frito-Lays. It is there if we are too thin and hate our bony-ness. It is there if we are enslaved and believe in some way we deserve this treatment from either ourselves or others. Either we find ways to torment our hearts and to keep ourselves hidden from something scary, or we let the torment of others break into our perfect shell and afflict us. It is the lack of self-esteem. How dare us? We are God’s children, created in His image! We are all Divine. How dare we ever for one milli-second ever not totally bathe in love and Light?

I told a friend this once: I believe it is our duty to seek and find the very hidden reasons for why we abuse ourselves. We all do it, in one way or another. I know girls who do not eat right; they either are bone thin or over weight. I know girls who drink too much alcohol. I know girls who use illegal drugs. I know girls who insult themselves far too often. I know girls who put cigarette smoke in their lungs all day long, week by week, year by year. I know girls who join more than one gym so as to not be seen too often at one and work themselves out to death in search of the "perfect" figure. I know girls who have let men hit them. I know girls who have starved themselves or thrown up to near death. I know girls who are reckless with their bodies and have sex with too many men. I know, very well, about all of this. I do not look down upon each person’s path. I believe there is a reason for each and every choice and experience we have. Life is not random. It is amazing. There are amazing experiences to be had. And if there is a word called amazing, then there is Divinity. Something beautiful exists and it is tying us all into our woven cloth of life and existence. I do not believe we are all floundering. I do not believe there are mistakes. I believe each moment of failure is a moment of grace. We will understand what it is all for. Either we get it all put together in understanding in this life, if we seek to, or in the next. And I think it still exists as an understanding energy within our Universe no matter when it happens, before death or after.

I had a Grandma who passed away in 2004. She lived a trying life. She celebrated life. She was feisty. She was the mother of eight. She was the wife of two. She left her first husband, my grandfather. Grandma told me all about her experiences with this, one day on a sunny porch when it was just her and me. It was not a normal thing to be Catholic and divorced in her world at the time, but she did what she felt was right for her and her children. She went on to work and raise her children alone. She lost a son who was only 18 years old, early on. My Grandmother was a strong, peaceful woman. Her self esteem came through in her image. I saw it. I talk with her regularly. I feel her around me. I feel connected to her. She teaches me still. I feel her in my hands, and in my belly. Life continues on, I do believe and lessons and gifts exist everywhere in time.

I know women who are talented and strong professors. I know women who are happy with the changes in their bodies and revel in the fact that they can nourish and develop another human life, no matter what they now weigh. I know women who do and teach Yoga regularly regardless of their pant size and change people's lives. I know women who see their body as a vessel for their precious soul and not as a mindless work out machine. I know women who write miraculous poetry. I know women who have studied alongside men in a time when most women did not even go to college. I know women who leave when a man does them harm. I know women who have healed themselves. I know women who are healers. I know women who love staying at home with their children and have no doubts about leaving a career. I know strong women who work over 40 hours in the corporate world and still are the nucleus to their husband, children and family. I know women who train for bicycle marathons so as to commune with nature and meditate on their life and inner strength. I know women who work in rehabilitation facilities. I know women who are nurses in stroke units of major hospitals. I know women who teach art to elementary students. I know these women well. It is women like these who I choose to surround myself with and strive to be like.

So if my belly is large, I am OK with that. I will always try to do my best at work outs, keeping fit for my strength and vitality. I do love to nourish my inner body with high quality foods and a balanced diet. So I allow myself a fine, warm, French dinner roll from time to time, not for one second thinking about the carbs. I work hard on not beating myself up all the time anymore. I go easier and easier on myself as time passes. I have to continually remind myself that I am equal to everyone else and I am beautiful, strong, talented and amazing. I am starting to believe it more and more, and as I do, more and more miraculous things occur in my life. It also might be that now I am choosing to see them. So the learning shift has been to not try and dig so hard to find the reasons for why I ever gave abuse to myself and my esteem, but rather, to totally focusing on the beauty within myself, and those other dark details of sadness, hurt and misery are just fading, fading, fading away.

Politics, USA and Independant Love

I don't usually like to talk politics...but I am conducting a poll for myself :) I am an independent and cannot stand the bickering I see on TV all the time. Democrats AND Republicans, where is this peace we all seek????? I feel it is certainly not among us.

"Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me...." Or what?????!!!

Leave a comment and tell me your thoughts on the view of the world at large, the war, things that are going on with policy in our country, foreign trading, etc.

I personally love companies like American Apparel:

I would love to see more commerce here and support of local businesses, than is currently going on. But I will not get on a soapbox...never will this blog be for that. But my parent's have EXTREME views on the state of the nation and I have been with them now for nearly two weeks and so it peaks my interest as to what everyone out there thinks as well. So let me know! Anything you feel you'd like to voice. I am open and love to hear it all.

My father-in-law also has wonderful views and spent 20+ years in the military and has a great view on world politics having been and lived ALL OVER this planet. He is pretty bi-partisan, I'd say and sees everything very clearly. I love hearing his voice and opinions. He suggests the ONLY media we should read or listen to is the writings and reporting in an opinion/partisan-free and ad-free magazine called Foreign Affairs. This is what you can refer to without ANY swaying to the left or right. It simply tells you what is going on in the world, FACTS. This is better than any news station or news paper in his mind and mine :) I do not watch the news or read any paper. I am over the "feeding" we get that really just has the opinions of the higher ups smeared all over reporting these days. See:

So! I welcome and look forward to hearing your thoughts!!!!

Peace,
Becca

On Vacation~Family Gratitude

The weather is cool here in Massachusetts. Both my sisters and parents live in New England within an hour of one another. I am the odd ball who resides down south. So I am visiting family for the last time before I leave for another hemisphere! Uncle Sam is sending us to Okinawa soon for about 2 years. I grow very excited for the trip. I hear nothing but amazingly good things about Japan and Okinawa. I know there is a Divine force in my life when big trips like these find me and I find them.

I feel so blessed to be in Massachusetts right now. It is not as warm as I would like it to be. We are not as close to the ocean as I might like. But when it was hot with past visits, we had equally as good of a time as I am having now. And when my parents used to live a mile from the beach we never really went that often anyway.

It is about family. And being together. And we are doing that. Loving that. We've stayed up after the grandkids have gone down. Had lovely dinners together and talks and shoulder shaking laughs.
It is amazing to see a new generation of little kid cousins enjoying one another. They know even at 2 and 3 that these are no day care fellow children, these kids are blood. They share a bond and know one another and how the Mom and Dads are loving each other and they are in a free, safe and loving place. It is bliss to see and enjoy their laughing and light.
I will miss visiting New England. I had some incredible lobster today. I plan to have more before I leave next week!

I want to say thank you to my wonderful family. Life is good with a group of fine folks like you. I am truly blessed.

Everyone, today, go call your relatives, near or far, and tell them they are special. Family, like 'um or not will ALWAYS be your blood, always be your people and loving them no matter what is the best thing you can do. That is my theme for the day.

PEACE Y'ALL!!!

Inspire, Excite and Breathe In! ~homage to my inspirational people.

I am dedicating today's entry to those who have inspired me most in my life time. All though there are too many singers, writers, artists and teachers who have greatly touched me and changed me to even mention, I still would like to name a few. I have searched for my college poetry professor online and have not been able to find her. I actually want to talk with her again someday. Alas, she was wonderful and her name was Martha Furlong. I think Poetry I and II were in my top five favorite classes in college. She taught us so well and I loved her sassy attitude. She loved Sylvia Plath and Martinis and I loved Mrs. Furlong.

When looking up synonyms for the word: inspiration, I found the coolest different meanings. In one source:

inspiration

Part of Speech:

noun

Definition:

Divine guidance and motivation imparted directly.

Synonyms:

afflatus

How divine is that!? To say that someone who inspires you could be Divine in essence, or the experience is Divine of being inspired. Perhaps I could even go so far as to say that when we are inspired, it could be a direct experience all of our connectedness to God and to one another, our Oneness. I love it.

In another source:

inspiration

Part of Speech:

noun

Definition:

A sudden exciting thought.

Synonyms:

brainstorm

And how is exciting is that!!?? Of course it is. When someone or something inspires me I feel the need to drop whatever I am holding (hopefully not the baby), run to a studio and begin to create. Weather it be write, sketch, paint, sculpt or simply do Yoga and meditate, I love that exciting feeling.

In the last source I checked:

inspiration

Part of Speech:

noun

Definition:

The act of breathing in.

Synonyms:

inhalation

How could I have forgotten about this definition?! Ha! And how cool that it can combine meanings in my mind. Ah! To take in a fresh, clean, morning breath! It is just like bringing in a fresh new perspective and/or idea. To breathe in new O2 can bring vitality and cleanse the mind, blood and body just like a miraculous idea can. Maybe that is why I love Yoga so much, it is multiple patterns of inspirations! Ha!

So here are the folks I love to love, thank you all for being.

This is Shiva Rea. Yoga instructor, surfer, dancer and many more things but really an inspiration to Becca. If I ever said, I wish I could be more like.....the only person I would say is Shiva Rea. She says she is not interested in "doing" Yoga, but rather BEING Yoga. Nuff said, sister. I aspire to be half as strong, peaceful, centered, healthy and intellectual as she. Both of these photos were placed in Yoga calendars around the time I discovered her, I believe back in the late 90's early 2000. Check out:
http://www.shivarea.com/ for the very best Yoga DVD's you could ever want.

This is one of Paul Cezanne's famous paintings called
Mount Saint Victoire. He painted this mountain several times in several different ways. He is the father of cubism. The reason why art is the way it is, in my opinion. As my sister Lisa (always an inspiration) so eloquently puts it, "the beauty of art is making a simple brushstroke look like a peach, rather than trying to paint to look like a photograph." That is art man. And Paul knew this better than anyone. I was lucky enough to see his private studio and this exact view out the window, in Provence, France. Yes, I feel cool.

This is Iris DeMent, she sings and plays beautifully. Her way is different, her voice makes me cry. I totally dig that. She is a true, creative artist. I almost named my first daughter Iris, after her....maybe if we have another girl. My other sister (also another constant inspiration) gave me a mix tape in like 1993 with her voice on it. Thank you Meg, good taste is your thing! Check her out at:

This is Christiane Northrup, M.D. She is a writer but also an OB/GYN. But she is so very much more than those two titles. She, before almost anyone else, was connecting the spirit and happiness to health and wellness. I have her book planted directly to my left this very minute and really, most of the time! The one book of hers I own is the size of an encyclopedia called, Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom, Creating Physical and Emotional Health and Healing. She prescribes things like tai chi...just to give you an idea of her coolness. I will be investing in each of her books as time passes for me. They are priceless volumes of knowledge. The next book of hers I want is to do with Mothers and daughters, awesome! And then she has one for menopause. I love her I wish she would have been my OB.

This is good old Lex Gillan, the great man who certified me to teach Yoga in 2001. He also taught me how to be simple and have a magestic meditation. "Lex Gillan has been a practitioner of yoga and meditation for nearly 40 years. He has studied with world-class teachers – including Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, Ram Dass, Stephen Levine, Father Thomas Keating, Andy Gold and James Ezelle, M.D. – since the 1960’s. Mr. Gillan has been a full-time instructor since 1974 when he founded The Yoga Institute in Houston, Texas, one of the oldest yoga studio businesses in the country. Since its inception, he has taught more than 20,000 yoga classes, 70 ten-day retreats and 300 meditation workshops. Mr. Gillan also teaches the Yoga Teacher Training and National Certifications Course, is a founder and Trustee of Rose Mountain Retreat Center outside Las Vegas, New Mexico and is on the Adjunct Faculty at The Institute for Religion and Health in the Texas Medical Center in Houston. He is degreed in Business Administration from Stephen F. Austin University (Texas) and spent five years as a commercial banker in Houston in the 60’s."

Hope I can pass along a little inspiration to some of you out there along with me, with this great list of folks.
Om Shanti, Shanti, Shanti
Peace, Peace, Peace
BECCA, out.

StART Me Up

So I had to squash my sobbing from yesterday's post with a more lovely, celebratory post today. Although I let myself have those days....sometimes, I try to stay positive most of the time. What am I excited about today???????????

ART! DESIGN! CREATIVITY!

I am planning the biggest move of MY LIFE to Japan, here soon in what feels like a week, but we have 'til August, thank ya Jesus. I plan on being more into my work there. I plan to take writing classes and start my own greeting card line.

Just wanted to say thank you to everyone in the world. Humanity. Humans who create Art. I have been so inspired lately! I love it. I can't wait to get sketching and painting again. To hopefully inspire someone out there like me, I have enclosed some of my favorite sketches. These are old, but I love to draw people....it is my favorite thing. If I could have majored in life drawing, I would have. Alas...these are for the artistic eyes out there...or anyone who wants to draw or simply enjoy! Join me!!

Pick up that pencil or pen!!!!

"If you hear a voice within you say 'you cannot paint,' then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced."

"As we advance in life it becomes more and more difficult, but in fighting the difficulties the inmost strength of the heart is developed."

Fear and Honesty in Augusta

My two babies, Mirabelle and Raja
This night I am sitting in my foreign home in this town I never had any desire to move to. I am just being honest here today. I am not well. I am scared. I got a bad virus or infection this past weekend. I got really sick. I always believe we get sick for a reason. Our wellness or dis-ease is all because of our thoughts and actions. It is simply what I believe.

I have been off track. I am growing weary of our HUGE move coming up. I am finding myself emotionally overwhelmed about it. Moving is one of the top 5 stressors of our entire existence. As an Army wife I am made to have to move all the time. I am not at peace with this yet. I am scared and stressed out. That is why I believe I got sick.

We recently found out that we cannot bring our dog with us to my husband's first duty station of Okinawa. She and I have been together for over 10 years. I have no one, as of right now, who I know who can take her for me. This is causing me much sadness and strain.

But I have to believe in every experience is a lesson. That everything works out for the highest good for all involved, always. Even for my dear Raja. Things look bleak right now. This is stressing my body, my marriage and I am quite sure the child and dog feel this sticky, dark energy also.

Thank you blogger for being my outlet. It is my place to say.....I know everything happens just as it should. It is my place to write and publish....that I know what we are experiencing and going through is the very best thing we all could be feeling and learning right now. Thank you words for being wings to my illness, flying away from this body in keyboard clicking.

Thank you to the devine. I believe in divinity, that it is everywhere. Our tough times are opportunities to remember the good. How could we ever know good if bad didn't exist? How could there be brilliant light without any shadow cast? There would be no yin to the yang. The Universe would not have a balance. Perhaps we are here to find out why this precious balance must exist.

To everyone out there ever struggling with anything, I pray for you tonight.

Love,

Becca

Army Wives Unite!!!!

Hey Y'all!
I am so excited!!! I am dedicating today's entire blog entry to Army wives!!!!!!! I am just breaking into the cyber-world trying to reach out to as many people as possible. Since we discovered we are moving to the island of Okinawa, Japan, I guess I have felt a little foreshadowing of isolation. I would like to stay in touch with as many family members, friends and loved ones as I possibly can through my little laptop for this reason. I am excited to report that through the internet I have found a lot of Army wife web sites to join and groups to be a part of. Please come back and refer to this blog and look for listings of awesome Mom/Military wife web sites and groups.

I never wanted to leave my (second) home of Savannah, GA. I was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio and moved to Savannah for college and NEVER LEFT for almost 12 years. I did travel around for work and relationships but always ended up back in my home of good old Geeee-orgia. Anyone who knows me knows I beat this subject to death. But when I was about 26 I decided I would spend the rest of my life setting down roots there and I love, love, loved the idea of that. I really hate moving and I love painting walls in my home and making my space my sanctuary. I love involving myself in a community and knowing people and locals.

Then.........

I fell in love with an Army guy. Yup.

All these things I love......have to now be thrown out the window and burned in the street. No more roots. No more wall paint. No more Savannah. BUT..........hello Okinawa!!!!! I am so excited about our move to Japan!!! And it has spawned this blog, my Facebook and Twitter memberships and has connected me with so many people, old friends from Ohio and everything!!!!

But my main goal is to reach out and connect with as many Army wives as possible! So follow me, contact me, chat with me! There is strength in numbers ladies and I fully intend on being strong. I want ideas and love and I share ideas and love. It has been hard for me and my baby to be alone a lot, but also hard for my husband to be away from us and working so hard his entire last year of training.

My goals are the same, community, love, roots. Now I just have to find them in a global way, and how cool is that!!!???

I guess I will just keep painting my wood furniture instead of my walls, so as to keep things fun.

LOVE TO YOU ALL OUT THERE!!!!! Stay strong! You are not alone.
